Not so scary Scarecrows

Scarecrows are great for Halloween, but can be scary to little kids. Now you can create your own non scary ones as a project with your little one. Here is some tips to get you started.

This is a great project especially for a kindergartner, it will help them with shapes, colors and body parts. You can create a friendly scarecrow with circles, triangles and other shapes. Construction paper can come in handy for cutting hats, buttons and other clothing parts. You can make a scarecrow hold a trick or treat bucket or another friendly item.

A recycled cereal box makes a great scarecrow centerpiece for a party. It's easy to make, by covering the box with light colored construction paper. Glue on some paper eyes, and other facial features. Make some patchwork squares from old fabric and make the head. Use raffia on a hat to add some fall feeling. Give your box scarecrow a scarf from a cut shirt color.

Paper plates can also be turned into a scarecrow. Decorate the plate to resemble a scarecrow face mask. With yarn you can create some hair. Use different colored construction paper also for facial features. Raffia makes a great collar for your mask. Don't forget to cut out the eyes so your little one can see through the mask.

A similar project can be made with a paper bag. Let your little one turn a paper bag into a scarecrow craft. Cut items for hair, make a nose and cut out the eyes. You can give your paper bag scarecrow accessories to , like a bow tie, some buttons, what ever they like. You then fill the bag with crumpled newspaper, and bind the end of the bag to keep the filling in.

Just have fun, and keep it kid friendly.

Shrink your Levis

Jeans may be hard to find to fit your body, and your proportions. If you get the Levi's shrink to fit line, you can shrink them yourself. Shrinking them yourself will perfectly fit the jeans to your body.

When you purchase your jeans buy them one inch to big in your waist and your length. This way they won't be to tight or to short after you shrink them. Start by placing your jeans in your tub, filled with very hot water, and soak for twenty minutes. After twenty minutes drain the water, and hang your jeans over the shower rod or tub to dry. Your jeans will take time to dry, usually overnight, and may be a bit stiff afterwards.

Now it is time to place your jeans in your washer and wash again on your hottest cycle. Wash them alone, not with any other clothing. When done place in your dryer on that hottest temp.

They should be ready to wear to your fit.

    Ear Wax

Ear wax, everyone has it. It does not mean you are dirty or have poor hygiene. In fact sometimes ear wax can become impacted and noticeable at the opening of your ear. There are ways to prevent this buildup. Not properly taken care of can reduce your ability to hear correctly. Of course you can buy over the counter products or do it the natural way. It's your choice.

Tip of choice: with a wash cloth clean your ears on a regular basis. Your finger and the wash cloth can get the ears clean on the outer section and remove any wax that may be there.

Peroxide or water can also help ear wax from building up. With a dropper, periodically apply peroxide or warm water to each ear. This will keep wax soft and help stop blockage. Leave the solution in your ear for five minutes than drain.

It really is not a good idea to stick items into your ear. It can be tempting to do with a swab or finger, but not really a good choice. You can actually end up pushing the wax deeper into your ear canal. If this happens it can cause a impaction, and then the wax is unreachable, and unable to escape your ear. In fact a impacted ear can produce more wax production.

    School Meals for Kids

As a parent I know that lunch box meals are a particular challenge in the healthy food department. The lunch box should have one complex carbohydrates, calcium, protein, fruit, and a veggie, but does the child really eat this way? Sometimes they will, other times the lunch comes right back home. So I want to offer some creative ways of mixing it up, and give them a nutritious lunch.

Try and use whole grain bread, and not white. Try avoiding processed meats and any sugary food. Jam and marshmallow spread out, and peanut butter and fresh meat in. Tuna and egg salad is another great choice. For calcium, cheese is the best way to go. If you have any leftover meatloaf, try making a wrap out of it. Add some lettuce and tomato, if you can get away with it.

I find cutting up fresh fruit into bite size pieces gets eaten more often then sending it whole. Adding a yogurt dip with it makes it disappear even better. Tasty dips are a great way to encourage children to eat fresh fruit as well as fresh veggies. Carrots, and cucumbers, even cherry tomatoes are great dippers. If you child is old enough sun flower seeds is another snack option.

For drinks the goal is to decrease the sugar content and to increase the vitamin content. So investing in a thermos is a good start. Send milk, or flavored seltzer. Chill the thermos in the fridge or lay it on its side in your freezer, and in the morning fill it the rest of the way up with your drink choice.

    Indigo Bee Soap Review

Today I received a handcrafted bar of soap from Indigo Bee. The bar I received was coconut lemon grass. I couldn't wait to try it, so after dinner I took a bath and used the soap.

It was a nice scent of lemongrass and lime blends. The soap also has Shea butter and jojoba oil as ingredients.

The soap lathered nicely, and when I rinsed off, there was no soapy film left on my skin. In fact my skin felt silky and smooth. And you could still smell the fruity blends, as if I had put body spray on.

I enjoyed the product very much, and I would definitely recommend it.

    Shave Bumps on Legs

All women know, that after shaving your legs you can get ugly shave bumps. It is actually razor burn, and is very common. This happens for several reasons, but all treatment is the same. But the best way to avoid this happening is to regularly replace your razor and shave in a different direction each time.

If you are looking for a treatment, its a easy fix. First you will want to dry your legs good after you shave. Then apply a good moisturizing lotion over your entire leg. This will help your legs to rehydrate. For the irritated areas dap some hydro cortisone cream on. Do this after your lotion is dry and before bed.

If your legs are still irritating the following day, try a good topical acne treatment that has benzoyl peroxide in it. Use this sparingly on your irritated sections.

    Smooth Nails

Your nails are a good indicator of your health. They should be shiny, and smooth. With the right tools you can do your own manicure.

To begin, you want to remove any trace of old polish. Old polish can make your nails appear rough. You want to use polish remover that does not have acetone. Acetone leaves your nails looking dry and can even cause skin irritations, around your cuticles.

The next step is to rough your nails up with your buffer. Use a back and forth motion to do this. What this does is exfoliate the outer layer and rids any ridges on your nail surface. In the end your nail will have a smoother look.

Turn the buffer over and polish your nail, this will get rid of any left over dead skin, and leave a shiny look to your nail.

After buffing you will wash your hands and make sure to get your cuticles and the tops of your nails. This gives you a natural manicured look. Then apply some hand lotion and let dry.

After that you should apply a clear base coat. The clear coat will make your nails reflect more light. And will even look shinier. A clear coat even lets a color polish go on more smoothly.

    Mirrors over your fireplace

Your space over the fireplace is a spot that does not get alot of attention when it comes to decorating. Usually the space is left bare or decorated with a picture or wreath. The best looking decor item is a amazing mirror. The right mirror will complement your fireplace and make it a wonderful focal point.

A large mirror with a bold frame is the best choice. It can be hung or propped above the fireplace for a dramatic look. It will help draw the eye to the fireplace.

A mirror with a frame that matches the fireplace hardware is another great match.

Mirrors of different sizes, hung randomly is a wonderful dramatic effect.

Just hanging a large simple mirror will also work as well.

What ever type mirror you choose, have fun with it.

    Potajes de garbanzos

If you are looking for a different soup to cook on a chilly day than you have got to try my Spanish bean soup. Its a Colombian recipe that I found and tyred years ago. If you like garbanzo, and chickpeas, with some ham and Latin seasonings you will love this soup.

To get started you need the following:

    • 1/2 lb. of dried garbanzo beans (or chickpeas)
    • 1 beef bone (for the stock)
    • 1 ham bone (for the stock)
    • Salted pork, thinly cut
    • 2 qts. water
    • 1 tbsp. salt
    • 1 onion, finely chopped
    • 1 chorizo (or kielbasa or Andouille sausage)
    • 2 potatoes, peeled and quartered
    • 1 envelope Sazon seasoning with saffron
Lets cook. Start with a good rinse to your beans. I use bagged beans for a fresher taste. Cover your beans with water and add one tablespoon of salt. This you leave overnight to soak.

In the morning you will drain your beans. Then in a large kettle add two quarts of water along with your ham and beef bones. Slow and low cook for 45 minutes, skimming the froth from the top.

In a skillet, you will fry your salt pork on a med heat, slowly. Add your chopped onion and saute the two until your onions are translucent. When the onions and salt pork are ready add them to your beans, along with your potatoes and sazon.

When your potatoes are done, remove your kettle from the heat than add your sausage of choice. Serve with some good hot bread for a filling meal.

    Stains baked in the Oven

Any one who bakes knows how messy and hard it can be to clean up the sticky spills. If not cleaned up when they occur, the stain will firmly affix it self to the interior of your oven. You can use smelly chemical oven cleaners or you can opt for common household products you have right in your pantry.

Self cleaning ovens will clean any stains by heat. With self cleaning ovens, cleaning products will damage the interior.

For home remedies oven stains can be removed with baking soda, washing soda and salt. Washing soda is found in your laundry detergent isle. You will need to combine a 16oz box of baking soda to 1/4 cup of washing soda. With a spray bottle of water, wet the stain. Then liberally sprinkle the stain with the soda mixture. Then moisten the mixture with water again. Leave this mixture there overnight and wipe off in the morning with a salt and abrasive scrubber.

Another way is to heat the oven to 200 degrees. Then turn the oven off and place a bowl of ammonia in the oven. Leave that in the oven overnight, with a fan or window open to ventilate the area. It is a smelly method but it will loosen the baked on stains, that can be washed up with soapy water.

    Children and Dentist

Going to the dentist can scare any child of any age. But it is a necessity for our children. All the tools, and procedures can be overwhelming to them. But there are ways to help your child not to fear going to the dentist.

Reading a book about Dentist to your child at a early age will help them get to know what a dentist is and what he does. The Bernstein bears have a wonderful book, about going to the dentist.

Discuss with a older child what exactly they fear, doing this prior to a appointment will help them relax some.

Purchasing dentist kit toys will also help young children relate to the tools of the dentist. Make a game with them, and let them work on your teeth.

Before going into the office explain to your child the whole entire dental experience they will have once inside. Avoid talking about pain before the appointment, this is the scary information you don't want to share.

Choose a dentist who specializes in children, this will also help your child relax even more.

    Preserve Fall Leaves

Who doesn't love the fall, the smells, the colors, the cool crisp air. Well if you would like to keep the colors, you can, by preserving the fall leaves. Its a great DIY craft, to do with your kids, in using the leaves later on to make a fall wreath.

Let's get started. Once the leaves start to color and fall from the trees, save some to preserve. You want to collect leaves with small branches. Once you have your leaves, you want to put the stems into a bucket of warm water. They will sit there for two hours. Make sure to get rid of any that are damaged. While the stems are sitting, proceed with the next step.

Take two parts water and one part glycerin and place them in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, once it starts to boil turn the temp down to a simmer. Simmer for ten minutes and cool. You will then cut your stems on a angle, and lightly smash the tip with a hammer. This lets the glycerin mixture in better.

Place your branches into the mixture and store in a cool, dark place. You will keep your leaves there until you can see little beads of glycerin starting to form on the leaves.

When you notice that, it is time to take your leaf and gently wipe it with a damp towel, and hang upside down to dry.

Once dry you can use your leaves in making a beautiful fall wreath.

    Spider Plants

Spider plants are a houseplant that is easy to care for. The spider plants have long grass like leaves and spidery stalks. This plant will regulary send out stiff stalks and small white flowers, near the tips. The flowers grow into miniature spider plants, and have complete embryonic roots. These can be removed any time, so you can re root them in water or soil. If you re root them in water, they will be ready in one week for planting in soil.

The spider plant thrives well in bright, but indirect light. If you give them to much sun and to little water the tip will burn.

These plants are also drought adapted, they have fleshy tuberous roots, which allows the plant to dry between watering. The water in the soil for these plants should be evenly moist.

Every few months you should fertilize your plant, with a good soluble or time released fertilizer, especially during its most active growth period.

Whats great about spider plants is they rarely have a problem with aphids, spider mites, scales or whiteflies. Over watering is the biggest problem. To much fertilizer will burn the tips or the leaves.

The plant is easily propagated from plantlets. Also propagate from the root or leaf cuttings. Never fertilizer newly divided plants, at least fo six months.

If you have miniature spider plants, they will begin to grow as soon as contact is made with moist soil.

    Clean your burnt iron

If you iron, then you have had burnt cloth on the bottom of your iron. It is a sad experience but curable. Not only does it leave a scorch mark on your clothes, it leaves fabric on your iron. There is good news though. It can be cleaned and corrected.

Let's get started. Of course you want to make sure your iron is off and cool. With a wet rag and some vinegar you want to lightly wipe the bottom of your iron and remove the fabric. If needed you can add baking soda to the vinegar until it makes a paste. Gently rub the paste on the bottom of your iron and rub the surface.

Then you want to rinse your irons bottom surface with a clean moist rag.

Then turn your iron on to max to see if there is any waxy substances. Once the iron is hot run it over newspaper several times to remove any residue.

For stubborn fabric that is stuck, just repeat the process.

    Yeast Infections women hate them

No woman likes a yeast infection, but sooner or later we all get them. They are very irritating to any woman. Some women even get them more than others. There are natural ways to cure this, and there are over the counter meds. Let's talk natural, since over the counter meds can be costly, and natural, well you know what the ingredients are.

One thing to try is yogurt, it has natural cures for yeast infections. Yogurt puts healthy bacteria into your body in place of yeast, therefore cleaning up the yeast infection. Plain yogurt is the yogurt of choice. Simply dip a tampon into the yogurt and then insert and leave there for one hour. The bacteria from the yeast should clear up your infection. It also helps with the burning and itching. Do this twice a day until the infection is gone, it can take up to five days.

Apple cider vinegar is another natural method for yeast infections. Make sure the apple vinegar is organic, due to low acidity. This will give you best results. The apple cider vinegar is used in a sitz bath, of very shallow water, only covering your groin area. Add two cups of the vinegar and sit for 15 minutes. Pat only with a towel. Do this every night for a week. Wearing loose clothes and breathable under ware will help the process along. Taking a few teaspoons of the same vinegar once a day will also prevent the infection from coming back.

Boric acid is also a cure for yeast infections, and does it almost instantly.  It kills bacteria which causes the infection pretty fast. Do not use the boric acid once the infection is gone. It usually only takes three days. NEVER take boric acid orally.

    Pet odors in the rug

All pet owners know their pets have accidents. And getting rid of the odor can sometimes be difficult. With one of these ways there should be no problem. And you won't have to spend alot of money.
Club soda is the first option. With paper towels, and a bottle of club soda you are ready to attack. Take and pour the club soda right over the pet stain that smells. Cover it completely, and let it bubble. When the bubbling stops, blot the club soda up with your paper towels. If there is still a slight smell, just repeat the process.
Also you can use a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water. Use the same process as club soda to complete the cleaning method.

    DIY Red Hair Dye Highlights

We already know anything we can create our self is better. We then know that it is chemical free. So here is a way to create your own hair dye, without the use of potentially damaging chemicals. It's quick, easy, and not expensive.

Begin by brewing strong rose hip tea, you can also use clove tea or strong black coffee. After brewing make sure your tea or coffee is completely cool.

While your tea or coffee is cooling, wash and rinse your hair very well. After that you will pour your mixture into your hair while you are still in the shower. It is best to do this sitting as close to the tub drain as possible so the mixture does not splash onto your tile or shower curtain. It does stain. Try and catch the mixture into a bowl placed in the tub while you are pouring the mixture over your head. This way you can re- use the mix.

This process of pouring the mixture on is done at least 15 times.

After that wring out your hair and wrap with a old towel. The mix will sit for 15 minutes.

After that time rinse the mixture out thoroughly and condition. You can then style as you normally do. And enjoy your new natural highlights.

    Hair Dye for High Lights

If you are looking to give your hair color a different look, try some high lights. Adding some lighter portions will give your hair a softer look.

Most of the time bleach is used to high light, but you can also use hair dye. Hair dye will not give you the same effect as bleach, but it will lighten your hair shade a few degrees, and give it a more subtle effecting look.

When using hair dye you will still use foil to wrap your hair. You will do the same process as if you we're using bleach.

The difference in using the two, is that bleach does last longer, but removes pigments from your hair. Hair dye does not remove pigment and will eventually wash out. This is the best method for you if you do not want a permanent look.

When your Capon is done, let it rest for twenty minutes before carving. You can use your pan juice for a topping or make a gravy out of it.

    Clean Feces from Cat Fur

Cats can be a joy to have, but long hair cats can require extra care. Especially when it comes to poop, in the rectal area. Cats are known to be clean, but this situation does happen. It can be the poop just gets stuck, or they just can't reach it to clean it off. Either way, you are the one left to help them. Here are a few tips that may help you with that.

The first thing you want to do is gently corral your pet cat. Do this carefully or the pet cat will get upset. You want to be in a relaxed setting in a room that you can close the door. Next have some treats handy to tempt your cat with. This is a important step you don't want to skip.

Now it's time to evaluate the amount of feces in the area. Sometimes it can be wiped sometimes it needs to be cut. If you have a skittish cat you may have to try another approach.

For dry feces you might be able to just chip it off with your hand wearing a glove. Then gently comb or brush the rest off. This dry feces can really get stuck to the hair so try your best not to tug the hair.

For damp feces stuck to the cat hair, use a thoroughly moist towel to wipe your pet cat. You may need several towels to do this.

Usually if there is just a little bit of feces it is nothing to worry about.

Untreated, can cause skin infections, so if you can not do the cleaning your self you may need a professional.
