Getting Indoor Plants to Grow Flowers

If you are like me, I love indoor plants. My most favorite is flowering plants. But getting them to bloom inside can be tricky. So I thought I would share with you some of the things I do, to get my plants going.

First I choose plants that I know will do well indoors. Get plant's that are great for your circumstances, and will grow in your space. I have alot of low light plants that flower very well indoors. African violets, lilies, and bromiliads are my favorite. If you are just buying yours make sure they have a healthy foliage, and free of disease and pests. This will prevent flowering until freed of these problems. If you can find plants that already have buds, that's even better.

Always find out your plants specific care instructions, especially when it comes to feeding. If your plant did not come with instructions there are alot of good plant care books on the market. Or find a good Gardening forum online.

Plants need water, but it is important not to water to much. I only use purified water, or rainwater from my husbands rain barrel. I get the best results this water. Tap water can be to hard. But if you happen to have a water softner, than that's great. Also all my plants are located in my home where the temperature does not fluctuate all that much. If you place them by a draft or a place that may get to cold, you will not get flowers. Or worse, the plant could die. You can purchase a digital thermometer to record temperatures at different hours, this will help to find the best location in your home or office.

 
Just like the correct amount of water, your plants need the correct amount of light. It will need the correct amount in a twenty four hour period in order for it to flower. This will of course depend on your plant type, so that's where the research comes in. The do sell lights that have timers on them, this allows for light and dark times for your plants. This is what really gets them to flower. If you don't have a timer, you will have to place them in a dark place when the lights are out, and this can be time consuming when you have alot of flowering plants.
