Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes was at the top of my list of food to try, in my air fryer. They are, one of my favorite southern foods of all time.

Fried Green Tomatoes are not the healthiest food. Typically, I fry mine in a cast iron skillet with bacon fat. But, I am going to try and make healthy Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes. You can eat them as they, are or serve them with some of your own pasta sauce.

You're going to need an oil mister, for this recipe to give tomatoes a really light oil coating. Do not use PAM or other sprays for cooking in an Air Fryer.

These Fried Green Tomatoes are first rolled in flour for an extra crispy coating, then dipped in egg, then a buttermilk mixture and eventually covered in a combination of cornmeal and Panko crumbs.

INGREDIENTS:

2 green tomatoes, (3 if smaller)

salt and pepper

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

2 big eggs

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 cup Panko crumbs

1 cup yellow cornmeal

mister packed with olive oil or palm oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

Slice the tomatoes into 1/4-inch sections. Pat dry with paper towels and season well with salt and pepper.

Place flour in a shallow dish or pie platter, or using a paper plate for quick washing.

In a medium bowl or cup, mix together the eggs and butter milk.

Combine panko crumbs and cornmeal in a shallow dish or pie platter, or using a paper plate for quick washing.

Preheat the air cooler to 400 degrees.

Cover the tomato slices in flour, roll in the egg mixture and press the panko crumb mixture on both ends. Sprinkle with a little extra salt. Mist the air fryer basket with the oil and put 4 slices of tomato in. Mist the top with the oil. Air-fry for a five minutes.

Flip the tomatoes, spray with the oil and air fry for 3 more minutes.
