Container Edibles

You can get more in your garden containers with edibles. Did you know that edible plants are just as beautiful as ornamental plants. And at the same time do double the duty. Edibles are like having eye candy that is edible and healthy. Try using lettuce or Swiss chard instead of a typical green plant. As a filler you can try using kale.

Swiss Chard and Pot Marigolds and Nasturtium are a great combo. Each are great for spring and early summer. The bright marigold colors are a thrill to the combo. Swiss chard is your filler, and comes in a variety of colors. Nasturtiums also have edible flowers that are peppery, and have a great growth habit that will actually spill over the container sides.

Scarlet Runner Bean and Purple Basil plus Patio Tomatoes are a great warmer weather veggie combo. For a even more dramatic effect and to add height find a trellis that will complement your large container. Then plant your scarlet runner beans near the trellis to start their climb. Letting them trail off the sides is also a great look. Basil and tomatoes grow well together because basil keeps the insects away from the tomatoes. But you must pick a determinate tomato variety for this combo. These are the bushy type tomatoes, do now use vine tomatoes.

Purple Sage and Okra are plants that need to have well drained soil that is on the dry side. Doing this makes them great container buddies.

Every plant in a container will receive the same amount of water and sunlight. Your combo's must be plants that need the same growing conditions.

Okra has pretty white flowers that look almost like hibiscus, that's because they are actually part of the same family. If you live in Florida, these can take those long hot days in summer months. But make sure they have enough water, and do not water again until the soil is dry.

Do you know a great plant combo let me know.
