Table Cloth Replacement Ideas

If you are like me and have a wood dining table, you want to protect your wood. Usually we use a tablecloth, but I want to share some other tips on how to protect it. Alternatives can also provide the same results, with the same enhancing decor qualities. Table pads, or glass overlays are just some of the options.

A table pad is just how it sounds, a pad that covers your entire table. It will protect it not only from spills, but from sun damage and scratches, dents and hot dishes. They are made to fit just right. Some lock mechanically to guard your surface. They are available not only in vinyl but leather.

Overlays of glass are a nice way to enhance your table. The glass is usually a quarter inch thick and is custom made for your table. The edges are usually beveled and the corners rounded for safety reasons. This type of cover lets the beauty of your wood show through. It does scratch easily, but will protect the wood from spills. The up side is the glass overlay is easy to clean.

Place mats are another option. They come in many sizes and designs. They also come in many different materials from vinyl to linen. Place mats are the traditional use for tables. The can be washed or changed daily.

The best covering comes from the maker of your table. The table may have a clear protective coating that is applied.  This prevents sun damage, scratching and also adds moisture resistance to the tables wood. It will also protect the table from chemical damage from certain spills like mustard, olive oil, even coffee. You can place plates and cups directly on the treated table with out worrying. However hot pads are recommended for serving dishes that may be hot on the bottom.
