Lefse Product Review

I received a delicious product today to review, called Lefse. I must admit I heard alot about Lefse, but had never had the opportunity to taste it. Marilyn Hudson who makes these wonderful tasting Lefse, gave me the chance to review it and taste it for the first time.

So let's talk about what is Lefse. Lefse is a potato bread that has been in Marilyn's whole life. Being a Scandinavian bread, it is made from russet potatoes, milk or cream, sometimes lard, and flour. You then cook the lafse that has been rolled into 12 to 14 rounds on a hot 500 degree skillet. And you can see the love and perfection that was put into these wonderful breads. After the lafse cools you fold it into quarters for storage. There are special tools that can also be used to make lafse, like a long wooden turning stick or special rolling pin that has deep grooves.

You will find Lefse readily available around holidays. For Scandinavians it will be around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Families sometimes gather to cook lefse as a group, because of the process it takes to make them. This is also how they pass the process down to the younger generation, so they can keep it alive. Starbuck Minnesota is home to the worlds largest Lefse. In some parts of the US you can even find it in your local market. But for the most part is handmade.

There are many ways to eat Lefse, I ate mine with peanut butter and jelly. My husband choose a hot dog. But there are many ways to enjoy them. Butter and sugar, butter with sugar and cinnamon, even other types of meat are just a few. They are also good dipped into some type of gravy or cranberry sauce and served as a side dish.
